The Catholic Bishop of Sokoto, Most Rev. Mathew Hassan Kukah has urged Nigerians to demand for the report of the 2014 National Conference hosted by President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration.

Kukah, who made the call in Abuja, said such thorough understanding would enable them demand what was most important to them from the government during the course of its implementation.

The cleric maintained that it was proper to kick-start the implementation of the 2014 National Conference Report by first making the report public.

He said: “the implementation of the 2014 National Conference report is not a ping-pong thing between the Senate and the executives.

“Such initiatives are always ongoing, it is left for the citizens to demand to know the details of the recommendations about what is dearest to them.”

The Bishop added that the call by the Senate though “is a good omen,” adding that naturally, such demand ought to fall within the purview of “the people’s parliament.”

On the spate of agitations in the country, Kukah blamed it on the inability of political elites to ascertain what exactly is wrong with the country.

He said: “the country (Nigeria) does not belong to Christians and does not belong to the Muslims, and people don’t get elected into public offices as Christians or Muslims. So, it’s a question of the failures of the inability of the political elites.

“There is absolutely no bad will but just sheer mental inability to understand the structure. It is a problem of leadership.”
