Social Cohesion in Lagos: Multi-Stakeholder Roundtable Organised by TKC

The Kukah Centre (TKC), with support from the MacArthur Foundation, recently organised a roundtable with key stakeholders to hold frank conversations on strengthening social cohesion in Lagos State. The event which held on 11 July 2024 brought together representatives from the National Orientation Agency (NOA), civil society organizations, and individuals with strong ties to Lagos State.

In his opening remarks, Fr. Atta Barkindo, Executive Director of The Kukah Centre, provided insights into the emerging issues in Lagos State and their relevance to the broader Nigerian context. He emphasized the importance of campaigning for social cohesion, common citizenship, and nation-building. Fr. Barkindo urged Lagosians to unite and value people for their abilities and shared connections, rather than their origins.

Under the facilitation of Abdulfatai Otori, a participatory discussion ensued on the unique blend of resources, diversity, and cultures that make Lagos special. Mrs. Abiodun Olayeni-Ali, representing the National Orientation Agency, expressed gratitude for The Kukah Centre’s initiatives in addressing these critical matters. She urged all participants to actively engage in the discourse, recognizing it as a significant step toward effecting change in Nigeria. She also highlighted the agency’s interest in similar projects. Muyedeen Yusuf stressed the importance of leveraging cultural diversity to strengthen Lagos’ social cohesion.

The major takeaway from the roundtable discussion is that Lagosians and Nigerians should come together to address pressing challenges by developing inclusive policies and moving beyond identity politics. The discussions were frank and impactful, addressing various issues and culminating in the formulation of actionable recommendations.

This event highlights the critical role of dialogue and collaboration in fostering a more united and cohesive society in Lagos and beyond. As Lagosians and Nigerians continue to work towards common goals, initiatives like these will pave the way for a stronger, more inclusive future.
