ProFuturo in Nigeria: Delegation Visit Marks a Decade of Advancing Digital Learning

The Kukah Centre recently had the honour of hosting a high-level delegation from Spain’s Fundación ProFuturo, marking a significant milestone in the journey of digital education in Nigeria. The visit comes as the ProFuturo digital learning programme celebrates ten years of implementation in the country, reflecting a decade of impact, innovation, and collaboration in expanding access to quality education through technology.

The delegation was warmly received by the Executive Director of The Kukah Centre, Fr. Atta Barkindo, PhD, who welcomed the visitors and reaffirmed the Centre’s commitment to promoting educational initiatives that empower communities and contribute to national development. As part of the engagement, the Deputy Director of The Kukah Centre and ProFuturo Nigeria Project Manager, Dr. Emmanuel Nkanta, formally introduced the visiting delegation to members of staff. The delegation included Mr. Albert López Martínez, Deputy Director to the President of Fundación ProFuturo, and Mr. Tomas Mensi, Head of Global Operations.

In their remarks, the representatives of Fundación ProFuturo reflected on the programme’s decade-long presence in Nigeria and highlighted the growing importance of digital literacy in today’s rapidly evolving world. They noted that equipping young people with digital skills is no longer optional but essential for meaningful participation in modern society, economic growth, and sustainable national development. The delegation expressed optimism about the future of the programme and underscored the importance of strengthening partnerships with government institutions, schools, communities, and development stakeholders. They emphasized that deeper stakeholder engagement and sustained commitment would be crucial to expanding the programme’s reach and maximizing its impact in the years ahead.

Discussions during the visit also explored opportunities for enhancing the programme’s educational content to better reflect local realities and societal needs. The Kukah Centre highlighted the value of developing a more robust and contextually relevant syllabus that incorporates themes such as democracy, good governance, civic responsibility, peacebuilding, and active citizenship. Such additions, the Centre noted, would help learners not only acquire digital skills but also develop the values and knowledge necessary for responsible participation in society.
Responding to the suggestion, the ProFuturo delegation welcomed the idea and expressed their willingness to explore ways of integrating more contextual learning components into the programme’s framework.

The visit formed part of a packed two-day schedule of strategic engagements aimed at reviewing progress, strengthening partnerships, and identifying opportunities for the continued growth of the initiative in Nigeria. It also provided an opportunity for meaningful dialogue on the future of digital education and its role in addressing educational challenges across underserved communities. The Kukah Centre extended its appreciation to the ProFuturo delegation for their visit and continued partnership. Special recognition was also given to the ProFuturo Nigeria Project Manager, Dr. Emmanuel Nkanta, the entire team at The Kukah Centre, and His Lordship, Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, whose support and participation contributed significantly to the success of the engagements.

As ProFuturo enters its second decade in Nigeria, the visit reaffirmed a shared commitment to leveraging technology, innovation, and collaboration to improve learning outcomes and create greater opportunities for children and young people across the country. The milestone serves as both a celebration of past achievements and a renewed call to action for stakeholders committed to transforming education through digital inclusion.
